Memorials and Tribute Gifts

If you have a loved one who has been impacted by the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP, and want to help us build a better system in which all citizens have equal access to political, economic, educational, and social resources, establishing a memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor them or celebrate a special occasion, such as a birthday, while supporting the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP. Your memorial or tribute gift will be a lasting tribute to your loved one and will make a difference at the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP.

When Tyrell’s mother passed away, he knew he wanted to do something that would establish a lasting legacy for her. He remembered that during her lifetime she was always praising the Grand Rapids NAACP for its tireless efforts to eradicate racial discrimination and building a stronger society in which all individuals have equal rights.

Tyrell decided to make a gift to the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP in his mother’s name using appreciated securities. Not only will his mother’s legacy live on at the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP thanks to the gift, but John also qualified for a federal income tax charitable deduction and eliminated capital gains tax on the securities.

Donors who wish to leverage their cash donations can use life insurance to accomplish their goals. By either gifting a policy outright or naming the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP as beneficiary, ensures the privacy of the transaction, which can be important for donors who wish to keep their gifting intentions private. Gary and Ann deeply value the financial support they’ve been able to provide to their children and the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP over the years. Recently, they updated their will to leave stocks and real estate to their children, while designating the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP as the beneficiary of a $90,000 IRA to be transferred after their lifetime. Since the Greater Grand Rapids NAACP is tax-exempt, the full $90,000 will directly support the organization’s mission.
Had Gary and Ann chosen to leave the IRA to their children, approximately $21,600* would have been paid in federal income taxes, leaving only $68,400 for their family. The couple is pleased knowing that their updated estate plan ensures their hard-earned money is being used most effectively.
