Former police officer Christopher Schurr is set to stand trial for second-degree murder nearly three years after the fatal shooting of Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Jury selection is scheduled to begin on April 21, 2025, with the trial commencing a week later on April 28. The case has experienced multiple delays due to a series of appeals by Schurr’s defense team, which argued that his actions were justified under common law. However, both the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court have upheld the decision to proceed to trial, stating that a jury should determine whether Schurr’s use of deadly force was lawful.
